Cab Chatter at the virtual North End Clinic on Thursday, September 1, at 7pm

By Lisa Murray

As the end of summer approaches, it’s time to get back to the Seattle North End Clinic.

Many of you have expressed the desire to keep the clinic via Zoom as it allows many to be able to attend without needing to travel into Ballard at night, especially as the weather gets worse, and it gets dark early. So we are keeping it virtual.

We are going to have an open forum where members can share any model railroading projects done or rail-fanning trips taken in the months we haven’t seen each other. The name of the clinic will be Cab Chatter: What I Did This Summer: Model Railroading and Rail-fanning Fun.

Feel free to contact Lisa Murray if you have something you want to share (like photos) and need any technical help. See contact information below.

We understand that many of you may be attending the Narrow Gauge Convention in Tacoma on Thursday and may not be able to attend. However, if you need a break, feel free to join and share your summer fun in real-time.

Looking forward to seeing you all!! Here is the Zoom link information:

Seattle North End clinic on June 2 – “Car Forwarding” options for your layout

June’s North End clinic on Zoom will feature a panel discussion on ways to provide “car forwarding” on your layout – that is, keeping track of which cars are directed to be moved where, in which train, etc. The panelists will include Burr Stewart, Joe Green, Russ Segner and Todd Von Stup, who will present different approaches they have taken to this subject, followed by open discussion with everyone present. As usual, we will open the meeting at 6:30 for meet and greet, with the panel discussion starting at 7pm. Here is the Zoom info to join the meeting:

Cab Chatter at the Seattle North End Clinic Tonight, April 7 at 7pm

Please join us for the first Cab Chatter event for North End virtual clinic tonight, April 7, at 7pm via Zoom. We are going to give everyone a chance to share their thoughts on a model railroading topic. So many of our members have knowledge to share but aren’t quite sure they want to do a formal presentation at a clinic. This will give everyone a chance to “present” without so much pressure. Who knows, you may end up liking it!

Tonight’s topic is one to which everyone in the hobby can relate: What advice or tips would I give my younger self if I was just starting out in the hobby?

Everyone has a few woulda coulda shoulda things they wish they would have done differently in the hobby — whether it has to do with building a layout, purchasing of rolling stock, or using a specific code of track. The list goes on…..

So grab a beverage of your choice and log in for a relaxing Thursday night of Cab Chatter. See you there!

Presenting “Post COVID-19 Model Railroading” at the North End Clinic on March 3, 2022 (virtual)

Please join us for the monthly north end clinic tomorrow night, Thursday, March 3, at 7pm to hear visiting clinician, James Knabb, present Post COVID-19 Model Railroading, a timely presentation about how the pandemic has changed our hobby. James joins us from the great state of Texas so we will be sure to start promptly at 7pm PST. The lobby will open by 6:45pm so folks can join and chat beforehand. Login information for the meeting is below.

About the clinic: The model train industry has changed significantly since the height of the pandemic and there has been a huge amount of people joining the hobby. We will chat about what types of new modelers are out there and how to get them to join the NMRA. We will also discuss what other clubs have been doing to stay active.

About the clinician: James is a junior at the University of Texas at Dallas as a Supply Chain Management major. He has been in the model railroading hobby since he could walk and is currently an NMRA member. He is the social media chairman for his local NMRA division and organized multi-division NMRA Zoom meetings for divisions across the world during the height of the pandemic. He is active in recruiting members at shows for his local division and regularly encourages new modelers to take a more active role in model railroading.  James is active in the organization Youth in Model Railroading (YMR) and presented at their national virtual meet in March of 2021. He created a blog called NextGen Railroaders and sometimes hosts Zoom meetings for college students to talk about trains. James also was the recipient of the 2019 LSR NMRA Youth Award for presenting at the 2019 LSR Convention for CAD design and recently received the NMRA AP Volunteer Certificate at age 19.

North End Virtual Clinic Thursday, January 6, at 7pm: Taking Better Photographs of Your Layout

Happy New Year!! With the winter weather wreaking havoc on the Seattle area recently, it’s good to know that we still have the virtual option for our North End clinic, regardless of the new COVID variant.

The January meeting is coming up this week and we are fortunate to have Lee Bishop presenting a clinic entitled: Taking Better Photographs of Your Layout, With Any Camera or Cellphone. Lee’s clinic will describe how he is taking pictures of his layout and share some of his recently published pics!

A little bit about our presenter:

Lee got into the hobby at the age of 5, with a Lionel O27 train set. He modelled in HO and G through his youth, into the 1990s. He left the hobby for several few years and came back when Bachmann decided to release his favorite prototype (an ET&WNC Baldwin ten-wheeler) in On30. He’s been in On30 ever since.

He is also a part-time military historian, having worked on various magazine articles, books and TV shows over the years in a consultant role. He is considered to be an expert on various topics of military history and also served in the US Army as an officer for several years.

Lee’s modeling reflects his love and interest for the WW2 era. He decided to model a fictional branch line of the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina (ET&WNC) railroad in On30, in an 11 X 10 foot bedroom in his home. The layout takes place in 1943. His layout has been featured in several model railroad magazines over the last couple of years

Lee presented this clinic in November at the Olympia clinic, but, unfortunately the presentation was not recorded. Lee has been gracious enough to present again on Thursday so folks who missed it in November can get a chance to see it live (and we can also get a recording!). Thanks to Byron Osborn for the suggestion!

Here’s a link to the clinic. The meeting will start at 7pm. “Doors” will open shortly beforehand:

Bridge No. 4, Where are You? Come Find Out this Thursday, May 6, at 7pm

UPDATE (5/2/21 5:00pm): This post was updated to include a biography of our guest presenter.

The North Seattle NMRA Clinic (also known as the North End Clinic) will be holding its May meeting this coming Thursday, May 6, at 7:00pm.

This month Mike Intlekofer will be presenting on A Few Things You Didn’t Know About the Railroad Bridge at the Locks. His presentation on the history of the single-leaf bascule bridge at the Ballard Locks includes rare photos and maps of the area.

Mike Intlekofer was born in St. Paul, and his family followed the GN westward, spending some time in Minot, N.D., before finally settling in Seattle in the Magnolia neighborhood. He attended the UW and received degrees in Physics and Electrical Engineering before embarking on a career in marine electronics and medical devices. Mike now spends his time volunteering for the Newcastle Historical Society, hobby farming, restoring antique equipment, and dabbling in ham radio.

A huge thank you to Russ Segner for organizing this talk for our group.

Of course, the clinic will be virtual. The Zoom meeting will start at 7:00pm, and the lobby will open no later than 6:45 pm. Here is the information for the meeting:

Turn Out for Turn Outs on April 1st (No Foolin’) – North End Clinic at 7pm

This April meeting of the North End clinic is Thursday, April 1, at 7pm.

For those of you who have been following Larry Sloan as he builds his new layout and are amazed at the quick progress he is making…be prepared to be amazed even further.

Larry will be presenting a clinic on how to build turnouts for your layout.

Why, you may ask, does someone hand build turnouts when they can easily be purchased? Well, as most modelers say, why not?!

Below is the Zoom link for the meeting. Doors will open by 6:45pm.
