Ted Becker, 1943-2024

It is with sadness that I am reporting that Ted Becker passed away on the morning of January 20, 2024, at the age of 80.  Ted was admitted to Bellevue Overlake Hospital on August 19, 2022, after he experienced extreme fatigue and difficulty breathing, and ultimately was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis.  After several weeks, some in the ICU, he recovered enough to be transferred to a care hospital in Seattle, and then on to a care hospital in Everett, where he has been for most of the time since.

He was making slow progress towards recovery and working with PT and OT personnel to build up strength, looking forward to the time he could return to his home.  Unfortunately, while at the care hospital, he contracted a MRSA infection, then contracted Covid.  Somewhat recovered from those infections, he then came down with pneumonia, which resulted in another trip to the ICU, this time at Providence Hospital in Everett.  He recovered enough to leave Providence and go back to the care hospital a couple of weeks ago, although once again he was intubated.  It is suspected that a blood clot caused his death.

Ted was a long-time member of the NMRA and the Fourth Division.  Both he and I go back far enough in the NMRA that we were able to take out life memberships, which category no longer exists.  For several years, Ted ran the Snohomish Railfans Clinic, and would often attend 4D clinics in Kirkland and Seattle (back in the Beacon Hill Clinic days).  He also attended numerous NMRA national and regional conventions.  In 2015 he and I started the Mount Vernon Clinic, at the urging of fellow model railroaders Tom Buckingham and Nick Muff (the four of us had been driving each month over to the Oak Harbor Clinic).

After retiring from Boeing, he and his companion, Janie, built a house outside of Granite Falls.  The house included a railroad room, of course, and he spent many happy hours designing (and redesigning) his layout and building (and rebuilding) it.

While hospitalized, Ted made use of his laptop computer and spent many hours working out a new layout design for his layout room.  He, like most model railroaders, was always dreaming and imagining his next layout.  He also, at my request, drafted up some CAD plans for a snowshed for my layout, which I have just about completed.  He was quite adept at CAD drafting.

Ted was also an avid radio control airplane enthusiast and was a member of a couple of flying clubs in the Monroe area.

His wealth of knowledge and years of experience in our hobby, and his willingness to help others, will be sorely missed in the Fourth Division.

Respectfully, Al Carter, Mount Vernon Clinic

If you have pictures to share, please send them to Larry‘s email, which is larrylsloan@gmail.com and put “pictures for the meeting” in the subject line.

Don’t miss Cab Chatter with Larry on June 1, 7pm PDT.

Freedom with Free-Mo at the North End Clinic Thursday, April 6, 2023

The April North End virtual clinic will be held tomorrow night, April 6, at 7pm PDT.

This month Larry Sloan will be presenting a clinic called Free-mo: Modular Model Railroading with Flexibility.

In last month’s meeting some folks asked about what is entailed in building a module. Tomorrow night you will not only learn about module construction but also what differentiates a free-mo modular layout from a standard modular layout.

After the presentation, we can also talk about the different modular groups that are in the 4th division and answer any questions that you may have about membership, etc.

PLEASE NOTE: From now on, the Zoom link will be emailed to the regular attendees of the clinic. If you are not on the email distribution list, please email Lisa Murray at northseattle_organizer@4dpnr.com or (preferably) text your request to (206) 310-6778.

Thanks & looking forward to seeing you there!

Virtual North End Clinic is on Thursday, Feb 2, at 7pm PST

Come join us on Groundhog Day for the February clinic at 7pm PST. Even if Punxsutawney Phill predicts we will have six more weeks of winter, we will always have model trains, right?

This month we will have guest clinician, James Knabb, a modeler from the great state of Texas, presenting 3D Pen and Small Details.

James will walk through the basics of how to use a 3D pen and show how you can use a 3D Pen for your layout, such as using it to repair railings for cars and adding small details. He will also discuss incorporating left-out, forgotten details and new ideas into your layout using a 3D Pen.

Come in the from the cold, draw up a chair, and join our monthly virtual clinic tomorrow night! This month we are happy to have Jacob Wright to present Jacob’s Summer Train Adventure.

Jacob, who lives on Orcas Island, had a summer vacation to remember on the mainland–taking the Amtrak Empire Builder to Chicago, going to the Bay Area to see Jim Providenza’s, Seth Neumann’s, Dave Adams’ layouts (and many, many others), and attending operating sessions here in the PNW.

Come Learn Some New Facts about the UP at the Seattle Virtual Clinic: Thursday, November 3 at 7pm

October was really busy this year — but in a good way. There were TRAIN SHOWS!!

It was nice to see many of you (in person) in Lynden and then two weeks later in Maple Valley. The 4D HO Free-Mo group had a setup at the Tacoma Holiday Food & Gift Fest, so some of us had a third weekend this month to run trains. So many trains, so little time……

That being said, it’s time for the Seattle/North End monthly virtual clinic. The meeting is this Thursday, November 3. So grab your leftover Halloween candy and join us for an hour or so of talking about train.

This month Aidan Murray will be giving a presentation on the Union Pacific Railroad called Interesting Union Pacific Equipment and Operations. A history buff, Aidan not only studies all aspects of the U.S. rail industry, but likes to find odd facts and/or anomalies about railroads and their equipment.

Cab Chatter Redux – North End Clinic is Thursday, October 6 at 7pm

Ever wonder what it would feel like if you had a party and no one showed up?

If you were at the September clinic you know what I mean. Apparently there was this thing called the Narrow Gauge Convention in Tacoma???

In all seriousness, for those of you who didn’t attend the convention you missed a good time. I am sure that many of you who did attend have lots to share about what you saw and what you learned at the various clinics that were held.

Since we didn’t have many attendees in September (I believe there were a total of five?), we are going try this again. We will have an open forum where members can share any model railroading projects done or rail-fanning trips taken in the months we haven’t seen each other.

The name of the clinic will be Cab Chatter Redux: What I Did This Summer/Early Fall: Model Railroading and Rail-fanning Fun.

(and, don’t worry, if people don’t show up this time, we’ll have another kind of clinic in November….maybe 😉)

If you have something you want to share (like photos) and need any technical help, feel free to contact me. See contact information below.
