Russ Segner presided over discussions of upcoming events and other things of common interest model railroad-wise. He then showed videos of a 1:1 scale 2-6-6-2 steam locomotive being overhauled. The curator of the Northwest Railway Museum (which operates the Snoqualmie Valley Railroad) was “on loan” to assist in some heavy work and narrated some videos of the process. Russ also showed some videos and slides of major shop equipment – a drop table for heavy wheel sets – being installed at the Snoqualmie Valley RR facility. The concept of the drop table is similar to the equipment used to install main landing gear for the Boeing 777, the record-breaking Bell X-1 rocket-powered airplane, and the two nuclear bombs used in WWII. The table at the Northwest Railway Museum is intended for the less spectacular tasks of removing and replacing main driving wheel sets from the organization’s steam locomotives being serviced.

The next Renton Clinic meeting will be on November 22nd. Additional clinic information (including maps) can be viewed by clicking here.
