Westside October Clinic is Tuesday the 13th

Bill Hupé

Last month’s clinic was interesting. We had only seven 4th Division modelers.

Jack Hamilton pulled last month’s clinic “Preparing Rolling Stock for Successful Operation” out of his back pocket.

Jack also talked about PSX 2015 in Portland. He said the Clinics were good. He also talked about the Command Control Initiative. He said although he was no longer a BoD member for the NMRA, he will continue his involvement as the the Chairman of the Membership and Retention Committee. Based on Jack’s track record, I’m sure positive changes will occur.

Westside Clinic Today – Tue, Sep 8th

Bill Hupé

The September 2015 Westside Clinic is Tuesday the 8th (today).

Last month’s clinic was interesting. We had only five 4th Division modelers. Jack Hamilton pulled a clinic out of his back pocket and put it back in for presentation.

Jack took over the meeting and updated us on what was going on in the PNR and NMRA. He encouraged us to attend the PNR and NMRA membership meetings. He talked about several NMRA initiatives: partnering with Scenic Railroads to provide NMRA members discounts; hobby shops giving NMRA members discounts; and changing the way manufactures can certify their products in compliance with NMRA Standards. He also touched briefly on Revisions to the NMRA By-Laws and Executive Handbook.

Westside Clinic June Report

Bill Hupé

The June Westside clinic was a great success with eleven 4th Division modelers attending. Jack Hamilton shared his latest model railroad adventures as well as some new tools. Pete Rowe brought a flat car and two trucks with loads of lumber that he cut on a miniature table saw, for use on a lumber mill project.

Steve Hauff’s clinic was titled “Toto, I don’t think we’re on Amtrak anymore”. The clinic illustrated traveling on two of Africa’s (and the world’s, for that matter) finest trains: Rovos Rail and the Blue Train.

The Rovos journey went from Pretoria, South Africa to Swakopmund, Namibia via Kimberly, DeAar, and Windhoek, with side trips to the dunes at Sossesvlei and Etosha National Park. The Rovos equipment as well as South Africian and Namibian hardware was also viewed.

The Blue Train section centered on the opulence of what is considered to be one of the best appointed trains anywhere. While the journey is only slightly more than a day, it is a day spent in 5-star luxury.

Typical clinics have a “Model Contest” and “Show And Tell”. Coffee and cookies are provided and bringing a friend is encouraged.

For those visiting us for the first time our clinics are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the United Way of Kitsap Building, 647 4th Street, Bremerton, WA at 7 pm.

Westside Clinic March 10th, Bremerton

Bill Hupé

This coming Tuesday, March 10th, is our Westside Clinic in Bremerton.

Steve Neupert is presenting our clinic and the subject is “Making Sure Your Freight Cars Are Layout Ready.” Steve will work on any troubled children (freight cars). If you want to bring one or two freight cars he will see what they might need.

Bob Jensen / Tom Barrett will talk about “What’s Happening” in the upcoming Bremerton Northern Model Railroad Club Swap Meet and last weekend’s UNW Monroe Show.

Westside Local March Madness

Bill Hupe

This month’s clinic was turned into an interesting experience for all who attended.

It, as always, was good to see the regular crew: Jack Hamilton, Armand Cyr, Jim Byerley, Pete Rowe, Steve Neupert, Steve Avery, Bud Johnson, Glen and Corey Walls, Reed Cranmore and new member Jerry Enders.  Surprise visits from the Superintendent Ken Liesse and the rest of the Liesse clan, Ed, Gay and Dave, made the clinic special.

Our scheduled clinician had to cancel at the last minute, which left me wondering how the clinic would progress.

We started off the meeting with reports from around the NMRA. Reed reported that the Bremerton Northern Model Railroad Club had set up the small configuration of their new layout for the Veterans out at Retsil Veterans’ Home. Said it worked well and once again was appreciated by the Vets. He said they are now working on completing the scenery by the Kitsap County Fair in August. He also said the fair is talking about moving them to the Pavilion from the Presidents Hall.

I then passed the floor to Ken, who brought us up-to-date on 4th Division business. Ken also introduced his clan. Most attendees had not met Ken’s family, so it was good to have this opportunity. Ken also brought up the thought of us hosting layout tours on this side of the “Sound” in conjunction with a 4th Division event.

I then passed the floor to Jack Hamilton, who brought us up to date on the NMRA. Jack presented Merit Awards to Jim Byerley for his Structures – Jamestown Station and Lumber Yard. Jim also was awarded a Civil Merit Award for his dual-gauge turnout. Jack then presented Pete Rowe with Merit Awards for his structures:  Coaling Tower, Pennzoil Service Co. and Cycle Shop. Pete doesn’t have a home layout, but his structures show up on other modelers’ layouts.

Jack also brought a couple of new modeling items to share.  First was Balsa Foam, an amazing plastic foam that carves like butter and paints like wood. It’s ideal for sculpting and model making because it can be carved, chiseled, sawed, textured, or embossed with sharp-edged detail. He also shared a set of brushes: “Special Brush Set” from Micro-Mark™ that appeared to be a set of make-up brushes.

Glen Walls entered his first scratchbuilt building, a freelanced engine shop, in the Model of the Month contest. And Pete Rowe shared a diorama created to showcase a trestle built by Dennis Hill (past 4th Division Superintendent) which will be presented to his widow.

We took a short break where the Liesse Clan spent time with clinic members.

Following the break, Jack Hamilton presented a clinic on “Building a Resistance Soldering Machine” based on an article from October 1995 Mainline Modeler™ “Resistance Soldering” by Karl Eiler.

The clinic wrapped up with a drawing for door prizes.

Come join us April 12th at United Way of Kitsap County, 647 6th Street, Bremerton. Clinic starts at 6:30. Clinician Walt Huston will present a clinic on DCC Decoder installation.

Westside Local, September 2010

Marion Weston

The Bremerton Westside Local Clinic was moved up to September 7 so that it would not interfere with the PNR conventions in Lynnwood the second week. October’s clinic will be back in it’s usual place the second Tuesday on the month which will be October 12, 2010. That evening Steve Avery will be presenting the clinic and the subject is still to be determined.

September’s clinic was presented by Peter Maitland on ‘Scale Color’. It was a subject that many of the seasoned painters hadn’t thought about. Color changes with distance. What may be bright up close will grey-out as it slides into the background. Who would think that the slightest dab of purple would gray the tone of yellow. And when Peter said slight he means slight. Green – red, blue – orange are the other colors on the color wheel and their opposites to think about when you are painting and are dealing with distance.

Like I mentioned earlier the next Westside Local Clinic in Bremerton will be on October 12 at the United Way Building of 4th Street, at 7pm. Hope to see you there.

August Westside Local

Marion Weston

I’m not just a little late with this, but a lot late. Sorry! August 10 we had a great clinic by Pete Rowe on the building of plastic buildings from scratch. Pete does almost if not all his buildings from scratch. He makes it look so easy, but I’m not sure that I could ever make anything as good as Pete does.

Our next clinic will be September 7. Yes this is a week earlier than usual, but with the PNR Convention the second week we wanted to insure that we didn’t miss out on our clinic. Peter Maitland will be presenting the clinic and the last time I talked to Peter he was still deciding on the topic. Another surprise.

The Bremerton Northern Model Railroad Club spent most of the month at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds. We set up Aug 9 and used the time until the fair to run trains and give our old layout some much needed TLC. Our next show will be at Lynden and we hope to see you all there.
