May’s “Second Saturday” layout tour Zoom is Jerry Boudreau’s briefing on operations

Join us next Saturday, May 11, for a continuation of Jerry Boudreau’s informative and humorous briefing on his HO Santa Fe layout in central Oregon. He will start with a brief overview of the layout, followed by details on how he organizes and runs regular operating sessions. He shows some interesting forms and methods that could you help take your own operations to a new level.

The meeting will open at 9:30am PST and Jerry’s presentation begins at 10am and runs for about an hour. We will also record it and post it to the 4dPNRMovies YouTube channel. If you missed his first presentation in March, here is a link to that presentation, well worth watching if you haven’t seen it (it is so good, it has already been watched over 3400 times!): https://youtu.be/sGjaFgxJeUA

The link to join his second presentation on May 11 will be posted here in the Grab Iron a few days before the meeting.

4dPNR March Layout Tour Zoom

Join us at 10am PST on Saturday March 12 for a great Zoom presentation. Lee Marsh will give us an explanation how he designed an operating scheme for his highly detailed transition era HO scale Great Northern layout set in the Washington Cascades in the early 1950’s. How he made the transition from a “lone wolf” modeler to a “party animal” modeler.

Remote Operating Session at the North Clinic Thursday Night, October 1

Tomorrow night you are welcome to a virtual operating session at the North End Clinic.

Keeping with our tradition of having our October meeting at Burr Stewart’s home, we are thumbing our noses at COVID and using technology at its finest to run trains over Zoom.

That being said, bring your sense of humor and patience as we navigate the Burrlington Northern from our homes. Multiple cameras have been set up all around the layout and participants will be able to run a train remotely from a web browser or a smartphone app.

The meeting will be a bit different than other Zoom sessions in the past. The clinic will start at 7pm with a quick overview of the evening. We will be utilizing the breakout room feature in Zoom for training/set up, so we’d appreciate your arriving on time. The lobby will be open by 6:50pm.

To help us prepare for tomorrow night, please complete this short survey to give us a sense of who will be attending and how you will be accessing the Zoom session.

Coal Creek Lumber Co, Model Railroading On TV

Russ Segner

Update: Here is a link provided by John Prentice from “Seattle Refined” with video and a picture gallery: http://seattlerefined.com/lifestyle/we-took-a-ride-on-a-tiny-train-and-loved-it-all-aboard

This Thursday, February 2, at 3 PM, KOMO TV, Channel 4, will broadcast a segment on local model railroading. The broadcast will feature the recent train shows as well as a segment of video taken of my layout, “The Coal Creek Lumber Co”. This is part of the “Seattle Refined” community show, in case you want to set your DVR.

Al Lowe, Fred Hamilton, and Dave Woodrell joined me in an operating session on my layout. The session lasted over an hour. No derailments or collisions. It was a lot of fun and I hope many of you can see it.

Pacific Northwestern Railway – Abandonment of the Line

Steve Haas

Update – Sat, Oct 8:

A big “Thank You!!” to those that helped with dismantling of Tom Enloe’s Pacific Northwestern today. Significant progress was made!

However … we still have a long time to go with the dismantling of the layout.

We are fortunate (thank you Tom!) that an individual with a 40’ trailer has stepped forward to haul away as much as can be salvaged, for potential future use in any number of future layouts! Any and all salvageable segments of track, scenery, bench work, etc. are being loaded into this trailer.

Operating Sessions and Work Sessions on the PNWRR and Cherry Valley RR

Steve Haas

Operating sessions are continuing on (the late) Tom Enloe’s Pacific Northwestern Railroad and Cherry Valley Railroad (located in Duvall, Washington), although our remaining time to take advantage of the layout is limited. Carol Enloe will be placing the property on the real estate market in late August or early September.

As a result, we will have an Ops Session on the second Saturday in September, the 10th. This is of course subject to an early sale and closing on the property. Doors will open at 10 AM, we will try and start the clock at 11 AM. Beyond that, operations will tentatively continue on a month to month basis, subject to the sale of the property and the closing of the sale. Please be aware that any given Ops Session on the layout could become the last, with very short notice. Come on out and enjoy the layout one, two, or a few more times – Tom would have wanted that!

Operating Sessions on the PNWRR and Cherry Valley RR

Steve Haas

Operating sessions are continuing on (the late) Tom Enloe’s Pacific Northwestern Railroad and Cherry Valley Railroad (located in Duvall, Washington), although there will not be a session in May due to other commitments.

Pending a sudden change in plans, the PNW will be available for Ops Sessions through late spring/early summer of 2017. In the past, Ops Sessions were not held during the summer months as most folks were busy with outdoor activities and vacations. Since our remaining time to take advantage of the layout is limited we’re entertaining the idea of continuing Ops Sessions through the summer.

Please contact me at Steve.Haas@comcast.net to be placed on the e-mail list for upcoming operating sessions or if you have additional questions.

On March 12th, 2016, friends of the late Tom Enloe met at his home in Duvall for a toast, scattering of ashes, and an operating session on the Pacific Northwestern and Cherry Valley Railroad.

After everyone arrived, Tom’s wife Carol, daughter Jennifer, and granddaughter Ambellina joined a group of model railroading friends for a toast with Tom’s favorite drink. Remembrances and a few favorite stories were told and some of Tom’s ashes were scattered in front of the crossing guard close to the building where his “model railroading heart and soul” is contained – the PNW and Cherry Valley RR. An operating session was held, and during a mid-session break lunch was provided by Carol’s family. During lunch more stories were told relating to Tom, including his legendary BBQ for the 2004 national NMRA convention (PSX 2004, held in the Seattle area).

The Future of Tom Enloe’s Pacific Northwestern Railway

Steve Haas

Carol Enloe, Don Trettel, and I held a recent discussion on the future of Tom Enloe’s Pacific Northwestern Railway (located in Duvall, Washington). Carol and Jennifer (Tom’s daughter) have both expressed a strong interest in keeping the Pacific Northwestern “alive” for the immediate future. To that end, we have tentatively adopted the following schedule:
