Eastside Clinic 11/21/24

By Doug Oldenburg

Please join us this Thursday for the virtual Eastside Clinic.

Now that most of the leaves have fallen, you may have a little more time to work on your model railroad projects! 🙂
We have no presentation planned for this month and instead are encouraging all of you to share what you are working on. What are you modeling and/or what do you want to model? Old time, the steam/diesel transition years, modern times or something else? Country, city or somewhere in between?
Do you have something in mind for Thanksgiving? Do you do something with model trains around Christmas?

If you have any photos, sketches, plans, etc. that you would like to share with the rest of us, you may share during the meeting or pre-submit to Russ and/or myself and we will build the agenda around what we get.

Topic: Eastside Clinic for November 2024

Eastside Clinic – May 16

By Russ Segner

We will get a good look at several terrific layouts seen in Phoenix at the recent Sn3 Symposium. Two are HO, one is On30 and one is Sn3. There were some very interesting track plans and some creative elements useful on any layout.

Join us to share your comments and let us all know what you are modeling.

Ted Becker, 1943-2024

It is with sadness that I am reporting that Ted Becker passed away on the morning of January 20, 2024, at the age of 80.  Ted was admitted to Bellevue Overlake Hospital on August 19, 2022, after he experienced extreme fatigue and difficulty breathing, and ultimately was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis.  After several weeks, some in the ICU, he recovered enough to be transferred to a care hospital in Seattle, and then on to a care hospital in Everett, where he has been for most of the time since.

He was making slow progress towards recovery and working with PT and OT personnel to build up strength, looking forward to the time he could return to his home.  Unfortunately, while at the care hospital, he contracted a MRSA infection, then contracted Covid.  Somewhat recovered from those infections, he then came down with pneumonia, which resulted in another trip to the ICU, this time at Providence Hospital in Everett.  He recovered enough to leave Providence and go back to the care hospital a couple of weeks ago, although once again he was intubated.  It is suspected that a blood clot caused his death.

Ted was a long-time member of the NMRA and the Fourth Division.  Both he and I go back far enough in the NMRA that we were able to take out life memberships, which category no longer exists.  For several years, Ted ran the Snohomish Railfans Clinic, and would often attend 4D clinics in Kirkland and Seattle (back in the Beacon Hill Clinic days).  He also attended numerous NMRA national and regional conventions.  In 2015 he and I started the Mount Vernon Clinic, at the urging of fellow model railroaders Tom Buckingham and Nick Muff (the four of us had been driving each month over to the Oak Harbor Clinic).

After retiring from Boeing, he and his companion, Janie, built a house outside of Granite Falls.  The house included a railroad room, of course, and he spent many happy hours designing (and redesigning) his layout and building (and rebuilding) it.

While hospitalized, Ted made use of his laptop computer and spent many hours working out a new layout design for his layout room.  He, like most model railroaders, was always dreaming and imagining his next layout.  He also, at my request, drafted up some CAD plans for a snowshed for my layout, which I have just about completed.  He was quite adept at CAD drafting.

Ted was also an avid radio control airplane enthusiast and was a member of a couple of flying clubs in the Monroe area.

His wealth of knowledge and years of experience in our hobby, and his willingness to help others, will be sorely missed in the Fourth Division.

Respectfully, Al Carter, Mount Vernon Clinic

Eastside Clinic December 22 – Update

By Russ Segner

Our program on the 22nd will be four volunteers who will share what they have on their workbenches:

Max Maginness, MMR is working on a section of trackwork that is a double track crossover lead into Jim Sabol’s O scale passenger station. It involves circuitry that automatically aligns the turnouts for any one of six platform tracks.

Alex Brikoff is working on a large HO structure, the Walthers Prairie C0-Op grain silo.

Greg Amer is working on an O scale brass EMD GP 15 kit

Lee Marsh is building a very interesting flat car load in HO.

We will have a discussion of possible locations for face to face meetings in the Spring of 2023.  One location identified so far is on Mercer Island right off I 90.  Please bring ideas on other possible locations.

Please join us at 7PM.

Eastside Clinic is Thursday, October 27 at 7pm

Aritcle & Photos By Russ Segner

Our clinic is set for October 27 at 7PM .  It is a Zoom meeting. The link is posted below.

We will take time to discuss what you are modeling, talk about upcoming events and have a clinic.

Our clinic will be about my model of the Coal Creek Lumber Mill which is the major scene on my layout.

Coal Creek Lumber Mill on Russ Segner’s Sn3 layout. It is scratchbuilt using stripwood.

Constructing Coal Creek Lumber Co. Mill

The Coal Creek Lumber Company mill is the major feature of my layout.  It is totally scratch built and was inspired by photographs of a mill in north central California. I drew plans for the structure as well as made drawings for the layout of machinery and lumber handling.

The clinic will discuss my research to accurately model all the associated structures and trackage. So, here is a list of things I will discuss:

  • The prototype
  • The plans
  • The overall mill site
    • Log dump
    • Dam and Pond
    • Trackage
    • Boiler House
    • Green Chain
    • Dry storage
    • Oil supply track and building
    • Office and dispatch building
  • The mill itself
    • Substructure pilings and floor
    • Roof trusses
    • Walls and windows
    • Interior lighting
    • The dock and loading platforms

Eastside Clinic Restarting

Aritcle & Photos By Russ Segner

I am convening the Eastside Clinic this Thursday, September 22 at 7PM.

We will begin with a brief discussion on the logistics for future Eastside Clinics. A regular site for face-to-face meetings is not set, so we will ask for ideas. The location should be from Bellevue south to Kent reasonably close to I-405.

We will also discuss possible topics and presenters for upcoming sessions.

Please join me for this discussion. I envision that there will be two Zoom meetings a quarter and one face-to-face meeting each quarter.

For out main presentation I will share photos of the rebuild of a 1906 flat car at DuPont. This will include photos not shared before of how we measured, sourced materials and then reconstructed a replica of the 1906 car.

The link for the meeting will be published on Monday in the Grab Iron.

Our Clinic this month is titled “Narrow Gauge Railroading at DuPont, WA” and will be presented by Russ Segner.  Russ will discuss the history and modeling opportunities of the DuPont Company’s narrow-gauge railroad used to deliver materials and explosives between the old DuPont Powderworks Plant and the pier on Puget Sound.  When the DuPont Company sold the property and the plant to Weyerhaeuser, the sale included the railroad.

After the Clinic, we will have some time for other folks to show off their latest model work in our “Show and Brag” segment.

Our Clinic this month is titled “Steam Locomotive Appliances” and will be presented by Ted Becker.  This clinic will finally answer: What is about all that “stuff” hanging on the locomotive with all those pipes running all over the outside, compressors, turbos, injectors, feedwater heaters, pumps, turrets, and why they are there.  The clinic will also cover a little bit on how a steam locomotive works with a touch of history.

After the Clinic, we will have some time for other folks to show off their latest model work in our “Show and Brag” segment.

Our Clinic this month is titled â€śWiring for DCC” and will be presented by Max Maginness.  Max will give a short history of DCC systems as based in the same standards in use today as have been available for more than 25 years.  This clinic will give an overview of the basics and some of the “nuts and bolts” for wiring a layout as a refresher, but the main topic will be a discussion of the many  practical building and operating items that still seem a little mysterious and even controversial.

After the Clinic, we will have some time for other folks to show off their latest model work in our “Show and Brag” segment.  The Clinic will wrap up with some administrative comments.
