Scale Trains Meet and Greet at Whatcom Skagit Model RR Club, July 29

The Whatcom Skagit Model Railroad Club in Alger, WA will be hosting Scale Trains for a Meet and Greet at 7pm on Friday, July 29th.  They will have a presentation in the Fellowship Hall at Alger Community Church.  Given the increase in COVID BA.5 in Skagit County, mask wearing is encouraged, but not required.

Come out and see what great products they are working on, hear about their plans, and ask any questions you may have. Also being shown on the 29th will be Karl Kleeman’s and Dale Bearden’s Monson Railroad layout. This fine On2 layout will be traveling to Maine in August, and then returning to be shown at the National Narrow Gauge Convention in Tacoma, September 1-4. It will be on display in the Church Fellowship Hall during the Meet and Greet.

Those who have not been to the Alger club, located next door in the old Alger schoolhouse, will be surprised to see highly detailed, fully sceniced and fine operating DCC railroads in both HO and N scales. Those who have been here before will be pleased to see plenty of scenery and operational improvements to both layouts. For directions, visit the WSMRC website at: http://whatcomskagitmrc.org/

Mount Vernon Virtual Clinic for May, 2022

By Ted Becker

Topic for May is Kent Sullivan giving his presentation on the Northern Pacific operations in Sedro Woolley, Washington. Kent is an expert on Northern Pacific history. The amount of railroading done by the NP in Sedro Woolley was a surprise to me and Kent does an excellent job of presenting the material with lots of photos and maps.

May 16 at 7:00pm.

We will be taking the usual break for the summer hoping to resume clinics in September. Whether the clinics are live or virtual will depend upon the state of the pandemic. Since nobody has offered to help there will not be a combined live and Zoom presentation.

4dpnrOrganizer MountVernon is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Mount Vernon Virtual Clinic for April, 2022 & other news.

By Ted Becker

Topic for April is the finale of Ron Hopkins’ excellent series on scratch building, Part III: Parts and Details. Part III will describe creating a wide range of elements (such as ladders, pallets, chimneys, doors, windows, corbels, roof vents, etc), a few larger bits (like pipe racks, cabinets, and benches), and conclude with some thoughts about interior detailing with examples.

Coming up on April 30 is the Mount Vernon Gabfest and Swapmeet 10am to 3pm at the MV Senior Center. A ton of great items for sale. Most of it HO but other scales represented to. Watch the Grab Iron for a list of merchandise available and final details of the meet. Email me if you have questions: rail.bird@att.net.

The May clinic topic will be The Northern Pacific in Sedro Woolley presented by Kent Sullivan. Kent is an expert on Northern Pacific history. The amount of railroading done by the NP in Sedro Woolley was a surprise to me and Kent does an excellent job of presenting the material with lots of photos and maps.

Beyond May I expect to take the usual summer break and look forward to resuming clinics in September. Keep your fingers crossed that the rumblings about a new uprising of the virus are not true and we can resume in person clinics. For those of you who wish for the Zoom clinics to continue I ask for your help to twist the arm of a volunteer to assist with doing a hybrid presentation. I can do one or the other but not both without help.

Mount Vernon Virtual Clinic for March, 2022.

By Ted Becker

Some changes of plans for the Mount Vernon clinic. Due to the lack of volunteers to help with combined virtual/live clinic the clinics will continue to be virtual for the time being. Also, due to a memory lapse on the part of the clinic chairman the topic for March will not be the topic announced earlier.

Check earlier Grab Iron posts for information on the Mount Vernon Gabfest and Swapmeet coming in April.

The topic for March is the continuation of the series by Ron Hopkins: Scratch Building Part II: Rationale, Tools, & Examples. Ron is an excellent modeler and his clinics are quite informative.

Mount Vernon Gabfest and Swapmeet, April 30, 2022

Mark your calendar, Saturday April 30, 2022. 10am to 3pm.  Location is the Mount Vernon Senior Center, 1401 Cleveland Avenue, Mount Vernon, WA.  Admission is free.

After a two year hiatus the Mount Vernon Clinic is hosting a Saturday event.  These meets are as much about getting together to talk as they are about the clinics.  This year we decided to keep it simple and forgo clinics.  Since the swap tables were so popular in past years there will be swap tables with stuff for sale and freebies.  Table availability is limited but will be available for a nominal fee.  Table reservations will not be taken until announced in a few weeks.

At this time no refreshments are planned so be prepared to bring your own or shop locally.  More details will be available nearer the date of the event.

Covid precautions will be the policy of the City of Mount Vernon and Skagit County in effect on the date of the event.  Much prefer everyone to be fully vaccinated and prepared to wear an approved mask.

For more information contact Ted Becker,  rail.bird@att.net.
