On Thursday, May 26th the Renton Gathering of 4D model railroaders met at the “new” Renton Highlands library (on Sunset) at 6:30 PM (and concluded at 8:30 PM). The meeting started with greetings by Russ Segner. There were fifteen folks in attendance.
The “Bring and Brag” offering by Dave Yadock was a Southern Pacific diesel “cow and calf” multiple unit (MU) locomotive.
Russ presented a slide show on the DuPont Company explosives manufacturing company at the town site of DuPont. This was a company located next to Fort Lewis/McCord and the south Puget Sound. Transportation within the company, and to the shipping pier on the Sound and the main line railroad, was by a three foot gauge railroad. Russ showed several pictures of the railroad equipment and that a restoration effort is currently under way for a portion of the line.
A locomotive and several cars have been restored to operating condition. Others await restoration or are on static display at the DuPont Historical Museum. Russ and several other club members have been working as volunteers on the project. Interested parties are encouraged to join in. While railroading in general is somewhat hazardous, moving materials that are to be used in weapons and demolition on a large scale requires very special handling. Some of these conditions were described in the presentation.
The next meeting of the southeast Seattle “Renton” gathering will be at the “old” over-the-river Renton library on the 30th of June (note – we are meeting on the fifth Thursday in June instead of the usual fourth). We are still looking for a permanent location as the library meeting room reservation system is “fluid” and we are not able to have a fixed date and place each month.
