Eastside Get Together South (Renton) Clinic on Sep 29

Russ Segner

The next Eastside Get Together South (Renton) Clinic will be in Renton at the Renton Highlands Library on Thursday the 29th (note – we’re meeting on the fifth Thursday of the month instead of the usual fourth). This is our first meeting of the clinic season and I am hoping that we have a good turnout. Our program will be “3D Printing” presented by Chip Van Gilder. Learn about this new and creative way to build that special model.

The evening begins at 6:30 with getting acquainted. Share some coffee and pastries and meet someone new. Bring a model to share. Parking is under the library. One of the nearby streets is under construction, so be careful finding your way. Additional details including an address and map are available by clicking here.

I hope to see you there.

August Eastside Layout Tour Changed to Sunday, Aug 28th

Russ Segner

The Eastside Layout Tour has been changed to Sunday, August 28th (from Saturday Aug 27th)

Two of the layouts originally scheduled for the Eastside layout tour in August have had to cancel. (Mike O’Connell’s mother passed away suddenly and the service is scheduled for the 27th; my wife, Susan, will be recovering from major back surgery the week of the 27th.)

The great news is that we will have two very special layouts open to 4D members and guests on Sunday, August 28thSteve Depolo invites you to tour his Sn3 Alaska Pacific Rwy in Woodinville. The theme is “Mining in Alaska”.

This is a very large layout with all trackwork finished and scenery almost complete. Steve has scratch built many large mining structures and two complete waterfront scenes. All locomotives have sound decoders and are controlled by NCE. This layout will inspire you.

Al Lowe is one of our NTrak leaders and will show us how he uses his modules in a home layout. When not setting up at local shows, Al has several of his modules organized as a layout in his Bellevue home. These modules are highly detailed. Al has a very creative way of setting them up in his garage.

Both layouts will be open from 1 PM to 5 PM. For addresses and directions, email me at russseg@gmail.com and I will send maps and contact information.

Note – there will be another Eastside layout tour in October in the Renton and Maple Valley areas.

Clinicians Wanted for 4D Clinics

Russ Segner

The 4th Division fall clinic season will soon begin. While most of our area clinics already have their lineups set, there is always a need for additional clinics ready to present.

If you have a topic you think would be of interest to model railroaders and would like to share it, please let me know. We definitely have openings for the Eastside Get Together (both the North Branch in Redmond, and the South Branch, currently in Renton).

Topics of interest: Prototypes, building structures, scenery, trackwork, interesting and special tools, electronics, track planning, and operations. These are just a few. Let me know if you are willing to share. Presentations are about 45 minutes and we supply the projectors at all locations. I can be contacted at russseg@gmail.com or 425-228-7327.

Eastside Get Together South Branch (Renton) Clinic Report, June 2016

Syd Schofield

4th Division, PNR, NMRA, Eastside Get Together South Branch (Renton), 30 June, 2016 clinic

About a dozen folks came to the Renton over-the-Cedar-River library for the Thursday evening clinic. Russ Segner brought the group to order for the presentations of photos of model railroad interest. JJ Johnston brought an example of his craftsmanship in a small HO scale store building decked out with signs, merchandise and the proprietor.

We had pictures of layouts and railroad prototype examples suitable for modeling ideas. The layouts presented were in various stages of completion showing finished rolling stock, buildings, structures as well as different scenery techniques in process. There were the fixed installation chicken wire armature overlaid with a plaster cloth skin, wadded newspaper bulk covered with masking tape and a paper mache skin, and window screen patches covered with a slurry of gypsolite. These ground contour shapes could then be covered with rock castings and vegetation.

Another method of a light weight material allowing some portability from the work bench to the layout was the foam epoxy in a mold that was draped over supports during the curing process. If the final shape is undecided and some exploratory shaping is needed for visualization, there was an example of foam insulation planks cut to approximate ground contour and laminated with adhesive such as latex house paint. This allows some shape and study before the final “commitment” to the finishing process. Both foam material-based methods provide for a sturdy yet light scene construction.

Russ Segner

This is a reminder that the next Renton Clinic meeting will be at the old Renton library on Thursday, the 30th of June. The library is located at 100 Mill Avenue South, Renton WA 98057, beginning at 6:30 pm. Maps and directions are available on the Clinics page.

Please bring 10 to 15 photos of your layout or prototypes on a flash drive and we will project them on the screen while you describe them. We can also discuss various locations in the area to get the best rail shots.

Bring a model to share and brag about!

If you plan to bring photos to share, please let me know ahead of time so I can figure out how much time we will need. Please also think about possible locations for next fall when our meetings will resume. I can be contacted at 425-228-7327 or russseg@gmail.com.

Russ Segner

This month we will hold our second new clinic in the Renton area. We will meet at 6:30 pm Thursday evening on May 26 at the Renton Highlands Library, a new library just east of I-405. The address is 2801 NE 10th St, Renton, WA 98056. Click here to see the 4D Clinics page with additional information and a map.

The focus of the meeting will be getting acquainted with fellow NMRA members interested in establishing this new clinic on an ongoing basis. Another clinic will be held June 30 at the old Renton library.

Program: “DuPont Dynamite Train – 1906 to 1975”

The DuPont Company began construction of a blasting materials plant just north of the Nisqually Delta next to Fort Lewis/McCord in 1906. The plant was to supply dynamite and black powder to mining, logging, and construction activities from northern California to Alaska. It supplied munitions to the US Military through the Vietnam War and was closed in 1975. The 1000 acre site was subsequently acquired by the Weyerhaeuser Company.
