Spring Meet Clinics Announced

Al Lowe

Mark 10:00 a.m., May 22nd on your calendar now so you don’t miss this year’s 4D Spring Meet. We will meet via Zoom, right on your computer or phone. We’ll have some important announcements, plus two MMR clinicians and a few surprises.

Di Voss,MMR, NMRA Western District Director

Di will discuss how he created the virtual Everett & Monte Cristo Railway on his computer using Trainz and the various tools and programs needed so you can do the same.

Gary Jordan, MMR, Gilpin Tram Railway

I was tired of operating my layout alone. Burr Stewart had a session with several operators in remote locations. I thought I could do the same thing. He used Zoom and some old cell phones at strategic locations with access to the layout provided by JMRI on each operator’s cell phone throttle and their computer as a Zoom meeting client. I thought, ‘That could work on the Tram!’

Superintendent Russ Segner will announce this year’s Golden Grab Iron winner. We’ll hold our annual business meeting (in merely a few minutes). Jacob Wright will show off the new 4D Facebook page. And much more. How can we pack all this in to a mere two hours? Show up and see!

We will post Zoom access links in the Grab Iron a few days before the meet. We’ll open up at 9:45 for you early birds who love to chat before meetings. But you have to provide your own coffee!

Vote! Now, please.

The 4D’s annual election of officers ends this Friday evening. You received your ballot via email on April 1. That’s a whole month for you to vote. But time is running out. Please do so.

Remember: voting ends this Friday evening, April 30th, just before midnight. So dig through your old emails, find the one that came just after midnight on April Fool’s Day, open it, click the link inside, and VOTE!

N Scale Layout FREE to a Good Home

posted by Al Lowe

Eric Olsen has an N scale layout available for FREE to a good home. If you’re interested, contact him by email at beakenator@hotmail.com. Here’s his description and photos of it:

I have a small n-scale MRR that began its humble life as an old wooden door.  Overall it is approximately 7’ x 3’ in size and includes block wiring for 2-cab operation.  The track layout features a main station with 3 tracks, a regional station with 2 tracks and a branchline station with a single track.

The MRR structure is notable in that it has a cantilevered fold-up design so that it takes up much less space when not in use.

Features:

  • Cantilevered folding table design.  Reduced footprint in erect position.  Safety lock in up position.  Attached legs fold with the table.
  • Peco code 80 track with Peco code 80 electrofrog switches
  • Tortoise switch machines with frog wiring and 12V DC power supply
  • Control panel with block wiring for 2 throttle control
  • Parking track (electrical off) for engine shed in main station
  • Branch line station also has electrical off switch position for parking a train
  • Dual throttle pack included

Size:

  • Raised position 3.5’ w x 7’ l x 2’ d
  • Lowered track height is 34” so suitable for children

Caveats:

  • I disconnected all the switch frogs electrically while trying to track down a short. The wiring is there but the short remains (somewhere)
  • The outer track on the double-track end is of marginal quality at the join and should probably be reworked at some point
  • Like all MRRs, it’s never been completed but that’s part of the fun

Clinic Report – Eastside Get Together – February 2020

Article & Photos by Syd Schofield

Don’t Forget: Starting in February 2020, the Eastside Clinic will be held on the 3rd WEDNESDAY of every month at least through June. (Time and location remain the same.)

The NMRA/PNR Fourth Division Redmond Clinic for February was held Wednesday evening at the Redmond Community Center, Alex Brikoff presiding.  The gathering was brought to order at 7:05 PM.  Notable and new attendees were introduced followed by upcoming events of interest being announced.  Refer to the Grab-Iron calendar for details.

There were numerous Show and Tell (Bring and Brag) items.  Several outstanding dioramas were presented.  A Sn3 caboose and a 2×5 foot blank/starter module were among those shown.  A showpiece for kids at the regional train shows, made up from foot square CNC milled “rails” panels in their own carrying case, was offered to get the young folks interested and occupied.  This was possibly the most relevant attraction for the future of the hobby to be seen at our shows.

The program for the evening were two modelling clinics presented by our counter parts at the Mt. Vernon Clinic.

The first was presented by Ted Becker as part of our Mini Clinic Event scheduled for March.  Ted showed us how he installs and utilizes small, inexpensive RC model servos to operate as switch machines for turnouts. Ted brought several items to show the details in adapting servos as switch machines.

The second clinic was a joint presentation by Nick Muff and Al Carter about creating and applying model railroad decals and graphics.  Nick first showed us how to create custom decals by researching the graphics online on Google.  He then showed how to import the graphics into a popular graphics program on your computer such as Auto Sketch and scale the graphic to the correct size along with how to edit the graphic to enhance the visual quality.  He then showed us how print the decal onto decal paper using an ALPS printer.  Al Carter then showed us the techniques and tools he used to apply the decal to the model after preparing the surface.  He also discussed the pros and cons of the various tools that he uses to apply the decals.

Please note that the Model/Photo of the Month Contests and Door Prize Give Aways have been suspended due to lack of donations for prizes.

Refreshments (coffee and cookies) were provided by C. J. Turner.

Eastside Get Together Clinic’s Mini Clinic Event, 2nd Call For Clinician Volunteers

Alex Brikoff

This is the second call for announcing the Eastside Clinic’s Mini Clinic Event to be held this year in March.  The Mini Clinic event is a group of four short clinics, not more than about 15 minutes each in length, to be presented during the March 2020 Eastside Get Together Clinic.  Each of the Clinic topics were determined by popular vote.  After the votes were tabulated, there were the four most popular topics.  One of topics already has a clinician volunteer.  The remaining three listed below still need clinicians.  WE DESPERATELY NEED VOLUNTEER CLINICIANS TO PRESENT CLINICS FOR THESE THREE TOPICS:

  • Servo switch machine installation
  • Fine-tuning and maintaining locos
  • Weathering rolling stock and/or engines

What I’m looking for is a fairly high level, short, summarizing clinic about 15 minutes in duration on each of these topics from the three clinicians.

So, if you have any interest at all in presenting a clinic on any one of the above topics at the Eastside Mini Clinic Event in March, please let me know. Call (425) 466-1490 or email abrikoff@frontier.com. Thank you!
