Woodlands Scenics Fire

Al Lowe

By now you’ve probably heard that Woodland Scenics suffered a severe fire at their facility in Linn Creek, MO. Here are some news stories with videos about the fire:

http://bit.ly/zUBWf4

Today we learned the extent of the damage direct from Woodland Scenics:

As you may have heard we have experienced a fire here at Woodland Scenics and there is good news and bad news. The good news is that no one was hurt during the fire or evacuation process. The bad news is that it took out a couple of our manufacturing buildings. However, and fortunately, there is more good news than bad.

We encompass multiple buildings that are spread out all over the town of Linn Creek. We only lost two of those buildings and those two contained just a small portion of our manufacturing facilities. Our shipping department, warehouse and corporate offices were spared any damage, as were most of our manufacturing buildings, so it is business as usual.

Thanks for all your concerns.

Respectfully,

Gale Cousins

WSHM Train Festival a Success

Al Lowe / Photos by Bill Kajdzik

The Washington State History Museum’s 16th Annual Model Train Festival was held from December 26th through January 1st and had record attendance. Several groups from the 4D were represented.

Bill Kajdzik was kind enough to share his photos with us. To see them, click here and use the small triangles below the photos to navigate.

Eastside’s “Dirty Santa” a Big Success

JJ Johnston

There were great December meeting gifts for everyone and lots of “stealing” under the official “Dirty Santa” rules. One notable exception was the absence this year of a white elephant gift. There was lots of really cool stuff.

David Yadock won Model of the Month for his mostly scratchbuilt HO station and was awarded first choice at the gifts.

Roger Ferris, who attended the NMRA convention in July, went to their Nonquet (which is what they called their banquet with no dinner) and won a door prize: a G scale Bachman 175th Anniversary boxcar.  Roger, after much thought, generously awarded the boxcar to Eastside member Jim Easley in recognition of his leadership in spearheading an amazing outdoor G scale layout involving residents of the Emerald Heights retirement community where he resides. Dr. Jim explained that each boxcar on the layout was donated by a resident of Emerald Heights and every car has a special meaning to each person providing the car. Jim thanked Roger and let him know how special his car will be to their layout.

FUNDRAISING REPORT. Our annual fundraising effort to offer financial assistance to members of the church which furnishes our meeting space, provides room setup, and use of their coffee and supplies, was very generous. We raised a total of $887, which will be divided between three ladies. The first is a 75-year-old grandmother who cared for her granddaughter and then adopted her when her parent went to jail for drug abuse. She lives in the projects on a limited income, has health issues, and has attended our church since 2002 and always gets a ride to attend church. The second lady is a widow of three years with a child in the Philippines where she and her husband were missionaries. She is getting by on food stamps while searching for a job and lives in a home as a guest of a church member. The third lady has had several surgeries and has just undergone another surgery. She only has part-time employment and financial assistance is very meaningful and appreciated over the holidays as she is unable to work until she recovers.

JANUARY 19, 2012. Our first meeting of the new year will feature well-known modeler Ron Cole with a Show And Tell entitled, “What I Learned About Casting Resin Train Parts.” Ron will bring various models, some quite large, along with casting equipment and resin. He will actually cast a few parts during his clinic while showing useful techniques. He will bring train parts used in train kits he successfully produces. This is one of those presentations you won’t want to miss. Reserve the date now!

Happy New Year to everyone.

Model Railroad Festival Begins Dec 26

Jack Hamilton

While Santa’s elves produce a lot of train sets each holiday season, they can’t hold a candle to the quality and scale of the ones on display each year at the Washington State History Museum’s Model Train Festival.

“Railroads have played an important role in our state’s history,” said Jennifer Kilmer, director of the Washington State Historical Society. “The model train festival provides a wonderful opportunity for us to share that history in a fun environment that involves Washington state residents and brings to life their passion for model trains.”

Running the week after Christmas, the 16th annual event will showcase eight model train displays designed and assembled by model train enthusiasts from across the state, including Boeing Employees Model Railroad Club, Cannonball Express, Pierce County Lionel Club, Mount Rainier N Scale, 4D NTRAK Group, 4D PNR HO Modular Group, Puget Sound Model Railroad Engineers, and Washington State Operation Lifesaver. The displays will occupy every floor of the museum and include the largest permanent model train layout in the state.

“The week after Christmas is a time that a lot of families have off from school and work,” said Kilmer. “We’d like to encourage everyone from around the state to consider a day trip to Tacoma.”

As an added attraction, this year’s festival will also feature a presentation on The History of the Great Northern Railroad and the important role it played in the development of the Pacific Northwest. The presentation will be hosted by Randy Dasho Sr., a local railroad historian who spent 43 years as an employee at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. The presentation will run from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on December 28 and December 29 and is free with paid admission to the train festival.

This year registration for Grand Rails 2012 will be handled in a new way. Instead of the large registration package inserted into NMRA Magazine, the full package can be downloaded from www.gr2012.org. Those who prefer a printed piece can send their request, along with their name and address to: GR 2012 Registrar, 4165 Costa NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525. There will also be a registration form and ad appearing in an upcoming issue of NMRA Magazine.

Speaking of the convention, even though Grand Rails 2012 has over 200 clinic slots filled, they’re still looking for more. If one of your members is interested in presenting, go to www.gr2012.org and click on the clinic application page. In addition, there’s still some space left for modular layouts at the National Train Show. If some of your members would like to participate, have them visit the convention’s website and click on the “Contact us” link and tell the Convention Committee what you’d like to bring.

Cruise Convention News: Some of our members think the NMRA “invented” the idea of a cruise convention. The fact is, we’re just catching up! Hobby and professional groups have been doing it for quite a while, so if your members are interested in seeing the great time others are having, check out these links:

Vincent “Hub” Hubbert Passes

Mark Anderson

Hi-Railers Train Group Secretary

I am sad to inform you of the passing of Vincent “Hub” Hubbert on December 7th while he was on his way to the hospital by ambulance. Richard Woods, the person handling his affairs, told me that Hub (as we all knew him) had a large train collection and asked his friends in the Pierce County train group to contact someone to handle Hub’s collection. Vincent Hubbert was a member of the Hi-Railers Group and brought rolling stock with him to shows to run trains with them. He was 75.

There is presently no memorial planned for Hub. The person handling his affairs is out of town until February. When more is known, I will pass it along.

You may leave a message of remembrance at the funeral home’s website: Tuell Mackey Funeral Home.

Richard said that Hub was an only child with no family. He will be missed. You may send personal notes to Richard at 1606 Cowlitz Way, Kelso, WA 98626.

Paul Scoles recently completed an HO scale diorama for a series of articles (and cover) of Railroad Model Craftsman. He is willing to sell it for $200 (rolling stock and vehicles not included). The kits alone cost nearly that much. It is about 2’x4′ and looks spectacular (see photos below). Anyone interested or with questions should contact Paul directly at 206-546-8012, or pbscoles@yahoo.com.

November NMRA InfoNet News

Gerry Leone, NMRA Communications Director

The Winter NMRA Board Meeting will be held on Wednesday-Thursday, February 8–9, 2012, at 9:00 AM. All NMRA members are welcome to attend the open portions of this meeting. To save money, it will again be held at the Palace Station Hotel in Las Vegas. The NMRA Budget and Operations meetings, which are not open to the public, will be held on Tuesday, February 7 at the same location. The Board expects a packed agenda. Details will be posted soon afterwards.

Several members have asked about the current content of the NMRA’s “Members-Only” section of the website, http://www.nmra.org/member. Here’s some of what you’ll find when you log on:

  • Division and Region newsletter article reprints that Jim Zinser mentions in his Division Business Car/NMRA@Home column in NMRA Magazine. All previously mentioned articles also remain there; it’s a great resource to learn new tips and techniques.
  • NMRA Magazine Classics, scans of truly classic articles from bygone issues of Scale Rails and The Bulletin. Our goal is to post at least one article from every issue of the magazine. You’ll be surprised to learn how many are already online. The articles may be a few years old, but if you haven’t read them (or have forgotten them), they’re as fresh as today.
    • 2011 NMRA Calendar Screensaver, another inspiring addition to your computer.
    • 2011 NMRA Calendar Photos also suitable for computer wallpaper, complete with a brief description by the photographer of how they took their shot.
    • Promotional Materials useful for Divisions and Regions. The NMRA Logo is available in a variety of formats and sizes. PDFs of the NMRA Member Benefits Chart and New-Member Solicitation Brochure, and the New-Member Sign-Up Sheet. National Model Railroad Month materials, including National Model Railroad Month logos in various sizes and graphic formats, and a Word document: “A guide to promoting National Model Railroad Month,” which can be a handy reference whenever you want to promote your Region or Division.

Remember: the Grand Rapids convention is fast approaching! There are two great convention videos posted on the Grand Rails2012 website, www.gr2012.org. Members who register before November 30 get first dibs on hotel reservations, tour reservations, and merchandise. The Furniture City Flyers Club is nearly sold out, so if you want to experience dessert at sunset on Mirror Lake, you’ll need to get your registration in now. Register at http://www.gr2012.org/register.htm.

Tacoma Open House Tour a Big Success

Walt Huston

On behalf of those who opened their layouts to celebrate National Model Railroad Month, I want to thank the members of the 4th Division and their friends and family members who came out to see our work/fun. Attendance at all the layouts was excellent. Visitors left with their many questions answered (all truthfully, I’m sure). There were hours of enjoyable conversation. Thanks again for taking the time to visit us.

Please note: Phil Harry lost a Pocket Digicam at one of the layouts. If you found it, please contact Phil at 253-514-8465.

Thanks again to everyone for a successful day!

Holiday Snow Train to Leavenworth

Al Lowe

Each Saturday in December, Alki Tours is offering the only daylight rail tour to Leavenworth, a quaint “Bavarian Village” in the Cascade Mountains. On each departure, eight hundred passengers board the train at King Street Station, Edmonds Station, or in Everett. The train winds through the Snohomish Valley and then ascends majestic Steven’s Pass. Along the way passengers enjoy a catered continental breakfast and onboard entertainment including strolling musicians, commentators, magicians and, of course, Santa! Near the 4,000 foot summit, the train transits the Cascade Tunnel — the second longest rail tunnel in North America. At approximately 12:30 pm, the train rolls to a stop in Leavenworth.

Leavenworth is dressed to the hilt for the holidays with chestnuts roasting on open fires, carolers strolling streets, food booths, sleigh rides, local crafts, outdoor entertainment and more. At dusk, everyone gathers to sing “Silent Night” and witnesses the grand tree lighting as it transforms the village into a magical holiday wonderland!

Afterwards, passengers reboard the train for a cozy trip home. A catered dinner is served on the return trip and the entertainment continues.

This trip sells out every year, so don’t delay! For reservations and information: call Alki Tours at 206-935-6848 or www.alkitours.com. The price is $149.00 adult and $139.00 for children for standard seating. Price includes round-trip train transportation, continental breakfast, catered dinner, and loads of entertainment.
