Great Northern Electrification, by Noel Holley
April 1, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
$5Noel Holley on the Great Northern’s Great Steam Railway Electrification!
Author Holley explains its construction, its operation, and its ultimate dieselization. In 1909, the Great Northern electrified the five miles of track which carried trains through the original Cascade Tunnel under Stevens Pass. Trains were pulled by small three-phase AC box cabs and the Great Northern became one of the pioneers of steam railroad electrification in the United States. The three-phase system operated until 1925, when it was replaced by a longer, modern, singlephase electrification and larger locomotives. The new 11,500 volt AC electrification stretched from Skykomish to Wenatchee and traversed the 8-mile New Cascade Tunnel. That system operated until 1956, when the route was dieselized.
$5 adults/ $3 seniors and kids, no registration required. Open house is at 6:30 pm, lecture starts at 7:30 pm.
