Air Eraser, Tacoma N Scalers Clinic Report, Feb. 2017

by Chip Van Gilder

The group met at the Fircrest Recreation Center on February 2, 2017 with 11 attendees. There was at least one new visitor and several regulars were noticeably missing.

The first order of business was to review new products available. Then each person around the table shared their recent and current activities in the hobby. A couple of the samples brought to the meeting are shown in the photos below.

After a brief break, Mike Stepner gave a clinic on how he uses an “air eraser” in his modeling and some of the techniques he uses.

The annual N scale Meet ‘N March swap meet will be held Saturday, March 28 in Portland, Oregon at the Valley Catholic High School, at the intersection of TV Hwy. and Murray Blvd., in Beaverton (on the west side of Portland). The show will open to the public at 10:00 a.m. and will feature three N scale layouts, vendors selling N scale model railroad products, and clinics for intermediate to advanced modelers.

If you attended in the past and thought the old warehouse where it was held was too cold, it has been moved to a school (with actual heat).

Tacoma Open House Tour a Big Success

On behalf of those who opened their layouts to celebrate National Model Railroad Month, I want to thank the members of the 4th Division and their friends and family members who came out to see our work/fun. Attendance at all the layouts was excellent. Visitors left with their many questions answered (all truthfully, I’m sure). There were hours of enjoyable conversation. Thanks again for taking the time to visit us.

Please note: Phil Harry lost a Pocket Digicam at one of the layouts. If you found it, please contact Phil at 253-514-8465.

Thanks again to everyone for a successful day!

The Tacoma N Scalers met June 3, 2010 at the Fircrest Recreation Center. The meeting was called to disorder at 7:30 and began with a review of the coming events for the next three months and a discussion of the newly announced products coming in N scale. A check around the room found that for some odd reason many people are turning their attention to outdoor things. This is odd because it’s still raining and cold most of the time.

The clinic for the night was “Signals” and was presented by Ed Hill. Ed was quite thorough, covering things not only from A to Z, but including a very thick handout for us to remind ourselves of just what Ed said/covered. Ed had prototype examples of various types and sizes of signals, spanning the time era of the ’20s to the present (he used photos, not the real thing). Everyone was happy to know all about signals and some are contemplating adding them to their layout. I don’t desire to rewrite my operating plan so I will leave the signals to others and continue to operate in the dark.

Our July clinic will be held on July 1, 2010 … that’s right, on the 1st. We will convene at 7:00 PM for the “Bull Session” and start the meeting itself at precisely (?) 7:30. The subject of the clinic is “Painting Brass.  The presenter will be Bob Judge and he will be backed up by Tyler Whitcomb (very far back).

The Tacoma N Scalers are a very friendly group of people who would be very pleased to have you join us for information, education and fun. We meet at the Fircrest Recreation Center, 555 Contra Costa in Fircrest, WA.

See you at the next meeting!

A work in progress.

More work in progress near by.

The Tacoma N Scalers met on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at the Fircrest Recreation Center. We reviewed What’s New in N scale and reminded everyone of upcoming shows and swap meets as listed in the Grab Iron. We went around the room and received updates on members’ layouts and other projects in which they are involved. We learned that The Seattle Train Center was once again sponsoring regular clinics to teach the basics to anyone who wants to learn. Contact them to learn more.

The clinic was an excellent presentation on how to do scenery using foam products … safely. Our presenter was Susan Evans and her presentation was very well received. Her clinic showed how to build scenery above and below the surface of your layout.

As usual, The Tacoma N Scalers will meet all summer long. By the time, you read this our June clinic will be history. Our July clinic is still planned to be “Painting Brass” by Tyler Whitcomb and Bob Judge of the Boeing Model Railroad Club. In August we will have Susan’s “Lighting Structures” clinic originally scheduled for June 3rd.

Also by the time you read this, Pacific Railway Hobbies will be very near closing their doors. Retirement has overtaken both Dale and Diane and we wish them well in their travel and other retirement activities. Thanks for the memories!

Come have fun with us. Our 2010 clinic schedule is available at our meetings, Online Trains, Pacific Railway Hobbies (for a limited time!), and Tacoma Trains. The Tacoma N Scalers meet the first Thursday of the month at the Fircrest Recreation Center, 555 Contra Costa, Fircrest.
